The Social Media Shortcut: Picking One Channel and Doing It Well

Smartphone surrounded by colourful social media icons.

Here’s the trap most SMEs fall into: trying to be everywhere at once. LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, X, YouTube… before you know it, you’re juggling five logins, posting half-hearted content, and wondering why nothing’s working.

The truth? You don’t need to be everywhere. You just need to be where your customers are — and do it properly.

Step 1: Know your audience

Ask yourself: where do my customers actually hang out online?

  • Selling B2B? LinkedIn usually beats TikTok.
  • Selling products to under-30s? TikTok or Instagram might be the spot.
  • Local service business? Facebook could still be gold.

Don’t guess — check your website analytics or even just ask your current customers where they found you.

Step 2: Commit to one

Pick the single platform that makes the most sense and put your energy there. Post regularly, respond quickly, and actually show up. Better to dominate one channel than whisper across five.

Step 3: Keep it simple

Forget daily content marathons. Instead, focus on consistency — even if it’s one strong post per week. Use the same tone, the same branding, and always have a clear call-to-action.

Step 4: Repurpose smartly

Once you’ve nailed one channel, then (and only then) consider adapting posts elsewhere. Don’t reinvent the wheel — just tweak and repost.

Social media doesn’t have to be a full-time job. For SMEs, the shortcut is simple: pick one platform, do it well, and let the results speak for themselves.
